Under the electrostatic model,clinafloxacin reacts with the phosphate group on the backbone of a DNA,and it exhibits similar fluorescence quenching effect on both ssDNA and dsDNA.But under the insertion effect model,and since ssDNA does not have the double-helical struacutre of dsDNA,clinafloxacin does not show any fluorescence quenching effect.When groove effect model takes place,even though the major and minor grooves of the sigle strand DNA derived from the doble-helical DNA are destroyed,the single strand DNA has an line-and-knots conformation,and surface of the knots have pockets that can form hydrogen bonds with small molecules.As a result,there is still some partial fluorescence quenching effect.
