在复合句中,修饰某一名词或代词的从句叫做定语从句.如：

The story that you read is The Snow White.

She looked at Jeff,who was waving his arms.

上面两句中的story和Jeff是定语从句中所修饰的词,叫“先行词”.定语从句放在先行词的后面.引导定语从句的词有关系代词that,which,who(宾格whom,所有格whose)和关系副词where,when,why.关系代词或关系副词在定语从句中充当一个成分.

1.由关系代词引导的定语从句

that在从句中作主语或宾语：A plane is a machine that can fly.(作主语)

The noodles that I cooked were delicious.(作宾语)

which在从句中作主语或宾语：They planted the trees which didn't need much water.(作主语)

The first which we bought were not fresh.(作宾语)

whom,who在从句中分别作宾语和主语：The foreigner who visited our school yesterday is from Canada.(作主语)

The person to whom you just talked is Mr Li.(作宾语)

whose在从句中做定语：Miss Flower is the teacher whose house caught fire last week.

2.由关系副词引导的定语从句

when指时间：I still remember the day when I first came to Beijing.

wher指地点：This is the house where we lived last year.

why指原因：There are several reasons why we can't do that.
