day the king of Atri bought a large bell and hung it up high.He said to

his people,“This is your bell.If anyone has done wrong to you,you

may come and ring it.The judge will come at once.”

Several years

later,the rope of the bell because so short that only a tall man could

reach it.“this will never do.”said the judge,“If someone has done

wrong to a child,he can`t ring the bell.”

So they went everywhere to find ropes ,but there were no ropes in Atri.They had to use some grapevines instead.

There

was a rich man in Atri.He had been a soldier when he was young,but now

he loved nothing but money.He had an old horse,one day he said to

himself,“What is the use of that old horse?I have to give him a lot of

food every week,and nobody wants to buy him,Mm,I must drive him

away.”

So he took the old horse to the road and left him there .one

hot afternoon,the horse came to the bell .he was very hungry.When he

saw the grapevine rope,he started eating it.This made the bell ring.

The judges heard it and came out.They saw the old horse was hungry and

also knew who his master was.

“This horse is ringing the bell,” said

the judges .“It shows that someong has done wrong to him.Go and bring

his owner before us.”

Soon some people brought the man before the

judges .“This horse saved your life many times when you were a

soldier,” said the judges ,“Now he is too old to do anything for

you.and you drove him away.Now we order you to give half of your money

to your old friend.”

The man bent down his head,and the people shouted with joy.
