因为基林的初衷是要检测整体地球的空气状况,所以要选择受当地气候、污染最少的地点,才能反映总的地球情况.最初是选择了南极和夏威夷岛,但是在60年代由于经费问题,只好放弃了南极的观测.

90年代与基林一起工作的 Dr Andrew Manning 曾经说过“...To do this,a location was needed very far removed from the contamination and pollution of local emissions from cities; therefore Mauna Loa,high on a volcano in the middle of the Pacific Ocean was chosen.”
