For a time in history England was conquered by the Normans who spoke French.Thus English farmers raised animals and poultry for which they have an English name,but the food later prepared from their meat was offered to the Norman lords who addressed them in French.

You see,beef and pork are both French names for their meat,while cattle and pigs are English names for the animals.
