China's national sport, table tennis is a popular sport in the world. Since the 1960s, Chinese players have dominated this sports arena by winning most of the World Championships. As such, China plays a dominant role in this sport. The origin of table tennis remains rather controversial, with the most popular and recognized version being that it originated in England in 1900. The reason why it is called "Ping Pong" in English is that it produces a "Ping Pong" sound when the ball hits the paddle. It was officially listed as an Olympic sport at the 1988 Olympic Games.
